Leather Types for Jackets, Explained

Leather is not one material. Cut the same jacket pattern in lambskin and in cowhide and you get two different garments — different weight on the shoulders, different line at the hem, different lives. Most of the confusion around buying a leather jacket comes from treating “real leather” as the answer. The real questions are which animal, which layer of the skin, how thick and how it was finished.

What are the main leathers used in jackets?

Lambskin, calfskin, cowhide and shearling account for nearly every leather jacket made. They differ less in quality than in fibre structure — how tightly the collagen bundles inside the skin are packed, and how much of that structure survives tanning. One distinction explains most of the rest: skins come from small or young animals and are thin and fine-fibred; hides come from grown cattle and are thick and coarse-fibred.

  • Lambskin — light, soft, loose fibre network. Drapes immediately, marks easily.
  • Calfskin — fine grain, tighter fibre bundle. Holds a shape without feeling armoured.
  • Cowhide — heaviest and most abrasion-resistant. Breaks in slowly, then keeps going.
  • Shearling — sheepskin tanned with the wool still on, so insulation and shell are one material.

Lambskin vs calfskin: what is the actual difference?

Lambskin is softer and lighter; calfskin is denser and keeps its line. Both have a fine grain, so at arm's length they look similar; the difference is underneath, where lamb's fibre network is open and loosely woven and calf's is short, tightly interlaced and uniform. Lambskin warms to body temperature fast and relaxes as it goes: pocket mouths soften, elbows can bag over years, a fingernail leaves a line. A soft lambskin biker like the Corvo Hooded Biker, or a long silhouette in plongé lambskin such as the Ombra Long Coat, is chosen for that fall.

Calfskin takes longer to give. In exchange, a stand collar stays standing, a zip line stays straight and a shoulder holds its cut — which is why a clean centre-zip biker like the Onice Biker is made in full-grain calfskin.

Is lambskin durable enough to wear every day?

Yes for ordinary daily wear, no if you want a leather that shrugs off abrasion. Lambskin's loose fibre structure is what makes it supple, and the same structure makes it easier to scratch, scuff and stretch: it is a garment leather, not a protective one. A jacket worn under a bag strap will show it; some marks lift with body heat and a thumb, some stay. If you want the leather to hide handling, change the surface rather than the animal — a pebbled grain disguises scuffs far better than a smooth aniline finish, and a hand-weathered lambskin such as the Granata Biker starts with movement already in it.

How do the jacket leathers compare side by side?

What does leather thickness in ounces or millimetres mean?

Thickness is quoted in millimetres or in ounces, where one ounce is a trade convention for one sixty-fourth of an inch — about 0.4 mm, so a leather described as 3 oz is roughly 1.2 mm. The unit began as the weight of a square foot of leather at that thickness, which is why it sounds like a weight; it describes the leather, not the finished jacket. Tanneries split or shave hides down to the range a garment requires.

Thicker is not better. Past roughly 1.2 mm a jacket stops draping and behaves like a shell — right if that is the point, wrong if you wanted it to move.

Full-grain, top-grain, split: which distinction actually matters?

Full-grain versus everything else is the distinction that matters; the rest is trade vocabulary. A skin's outermost layer, the grain, is where the fibres are densest and finest, and everything below it is progressively looser.

A full-grain jacket will not look flawless: insect marks and growth lines are the evidence the surface was never sanded. Corrected grain is not a fault, only a choice for evenness.

What are suede and nubuck, and why do they behave differently?

Suede and nubuck are both napped leathers, but the nap is raised on opposite faces. Suede is the flesh side, or a split, buffed to a soft, longer nap. Nubuck is the grain side, sanded lightly to a short, dense nap — finer to the touch and tougher, because the grain layer still does the structural work. Neither surface is sealed, so both take water marks, drink oils from hands and burnish where rubbed.

How does shearling actually keep you warm?

Shearling insulates by trapping air, not by being thick. It is a single sheepskin tanned with the fleece still attached and shorn to an even depth: the skin is a wind-resistant shell, the wool the insulation, bonded permanently with no lining to shift.

The mechanism is the crimp in wool fibre: crimped fibres cannot pack flat, so the fleece holds still air, and still air insulates. Wool also takes up a large share of its own weight in water vapour before it feels damp, which is why shearling stays comfortable in cold, wet air. The cost is bulk. The outer face can go either way: a suede-faced sheepskin like the Artico Shearling wears the napped skin outward, while a bomber in pebble-grain calf such as the Aviatore Shearling Bomber turns the fleece inward and keeps a grained, structured face outside.

Does the finish change how a jacket ages?

Yes — as much as the animal does. Two panels from the same hide, finished differently, will age nothing alike.

  • Aniline — dyed through with transparent dyes, no pigment topcoat. The most natural hand and the clearest patina, and the most vulnerable to scratches and water spots.
  • Semi-aniline and pigmented — a light or heavy coloured film over the grain. More even and more resistant as the film thickens, less patina over time.
  • Pebble grain — a raised, irregular surface, natural on some skins and pressed into others. It scatters light, which makes it the most forgiving finish for daily wear.
  • Waxed and distressed — oils and waxes worked in so the surface lightens at the folds, as on a distressed cowhide trucker.
  • Embossed — a pattern pressed into the grain under heat and pressure, as on a croc-embossed lambskin moto. It wears like the leather beneath it.

How should each leather be looked after?

Care follows the surface, not the animal: smooth leathers want occasional conditioning, napped leathers want brushing and no oils at all. Let a wet jacket dry slowly at room temperature, never near a radiator or a hairdryer — heat drives out the oils the fibres depend on and the leather stiffens for good. And test any product on a hidden seam allowance first, since most conditioners darken leather.

  • Smooth lambskin and calfskin — wipe with a barely damp cloth and condition sparingly, only when the leather feels dry to the hand. Over-conditioning softens a jacket past the point where it holds a shape. Cowhide tolerates more.
  • Suede and nubuck — dry brushing lifts the nap; keep oils and conditioners away entirely, since oil flattens and darkens it.
  • Shearling — brush the wool, spot-clean rather than soak, never machine wash, and store it hanging. Long compression is what kills loft.

Which leather should you choose?

Choose by how the jacket will be used, not by which leather sounds impressive: the use decides the fibre structure, and the fibre structure decides the animal.

  • Daily, all-year, minimum fuss — calfskin, or a pebbled lambskin: enough structure for routine, enough give to be comfortable from the start.
  • Real cold — shearling, or a quilted leather with insulation built in; wind resistance matters more than thickness.
  • Something to hand on — full-grain cowhide: slowest to break in, slowest to give up.
  • Lightness and drape above all — thin, aniline-finished lambskin, accepted on its own terms: it will show its life.
